Pill Explains His Maybach Music Deal

Atlanta rapper Pill has seen his profile raised since he joined Rick Ross' Maybach Music imprint. The rapper recently released his mixtape "The Diagnosis," and shared what his approach will be going forward now that he's affiliated with a major label.

"Its just basically me doing my same type of music with just a bigger look and a bigger stamp," Pill told AllHipHop. "Being that Ross got me over at Maybach Music, it's an all around good look and he just wants you to do you. Make sure you put out your music and he can give any type of input that he may feel that you may need, and he don't stop me from trying to do the type of music that I want to put out. I just continue to put out the type of music that I want to put out and that got me signed."

Pill also explained the track "Scotty Pippen, Tim Duncan."

"It just was basically trying to come up with some slang, as a reference to the trap like doing numbers or being numbers," he said. "Something besides going ham, because it seems as if everyone been going ham.... really hard, I was like ' well let me come out with something else right now'. So hopefully that will catch on just as much as the other one did too, but this time I will be credited."

Introducing the King of Hip-Hop

Now more than three decades old as a recorded medium, hip-hop is deeply embedded in popular culture – to the point where its stars seem not only larger than life but also, as Rick Ross once put it, "deeper than rap." But even as they sell out arenas and top the pop charts, rappers still court the respect and esteem of their hip-hop peers. The title King of Hip-Hop still means something.

In that spirit, just as we did in June with the Queen of Pop, we've crunched a pile of data to try to determine who is the current King of Hip-Hop.

We're not looking for the all-time greatest, although many of our contenders would vie for that crown. Some of them have only been recording a couple of years; others have been in the game since the 1990s. But that's what makes hip-hop exciting – it's plausible for someone who was watching cartoons when Jay-Z dropped his debut album to emerge as a contender for the title.

As with our Queen of Pop tally, in naming the King of Hip-Hop we focused on the very recent past: from 2009 through the first seven months of 2011. We ranked 20 solo rappers (no groups – sorry, Beasties) who have dropped an album during that time. We looked at album sales, rankings on the R&B/hip-hop and rap charts, YouTube views, social media, concert grosses, industry awards and critics' ratings. In alphabetical order, our contenders are: Big Boi, B.o.B, Diddy, Drake, Eminem, Fabolous, Lupe Fiasco, Gucci Mane, Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Nicki Minaj, Pitbull, Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg, T.I., Waka Flocka Flame, Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa.

All of our contenders are men except for Minaj, who reappears from our Queen of Pop survey. We like to think of "King" as a gender-neutral term, and the fact is that Minaj has earned the right to compete in this arena. It would feel strange to leave her out – as a rapper, she's had a world-beating couple of years, with a chart-topping album, block-rocking singles and a slew of killer guest appearances. Frankly, she deserves to be called a hip-hop king just for her giant-killing appearance on West's hit "Monster," in which she crushed West and fellow guests Rick Ross and Jay-Z with one blow.

Fans of the rappers, and the acts themselves, take these sorts of rankings pretty seriously. (We learned that firsthand in the comments section of Queens of Pop.) We stand by our data, but of course we know that no King of Hip-Hop index can capture swagger or flow – if it could, the all-time title might go to Q-Tip or Rakim. As you'll see, it turned out to be a fairly exciting contest. Our top overall contenders were pretty evenly matched, with five different rappers leading at least one tally each.

Let's start with the tally that comes with the biggest bragging rights: album sales.

"Tha Carter IV" Track Listing Revealed

Lil Wayne is releasing more details about his highly-anticipated Tha Carter IV album. The project's track list has finally hit the web, and features several notables, including Rick Ross, John Legend and Jadakiss.

Underground star Tech N9ne also appears on the album.

DMX On Joining Maybach Music

Despite the fact that Rick Ross allegedly made an offer to recently-released rapper DMX to join Ross' Maybach Music Group, X gave a short, sweet and decisive answer when he was asked about joining the Miami rapper's label.

"Nah, probably not," X said.

He didn't offer any further explanations, but it remains to be seen if, when and how X can restore the luster to his hip hop career. He's had a ridiculous string of legal mishaps and has been in and out of jail for several years.

Jeezy Subliminally Dissed Rick Ross?

Jeezy claimed he didn't have any reason to feud with Rick Ross when he was asked about Rozay in a recent interview. But Jeezy also took a not-so-subtle dig at the Miami rapper when explaining his own authenticity.

"We can agree to disagree," Jeezy said. "But if it's a problem, I ain't hard to find. I said what I said, I ain't see no harm in that...In my heart, I'm 100 percent real. You can't pull out nothing in my past that can say I'm not 100 percent real. If you speak on it and that's what you doing, just speaking on it, it's entertainment. I'm not gonna argue with a grown man about me. That might put me in a box."

Beanie Sigel Supports Rick Ross

Beanie Sigel has voiced his support for Rick Ross and downplayed the rapper's past as a corrections officer. When it was revealed years ago that Ross had a history in law enforcement, several denounced the Miami-based superstar; due to the fact that much of his lyrics focus on lavish drug kingpin tales. But to Sigel, its not a big deal.

"I just don't think he should have lied about it," Sigel said in an interview. "He should have just kept it real. He had a j-o-b. He was gigging. He probably took that job to be in a position where as though he had people in there that he could look out for. My mom was a correctional officer. When I went to jail, there was n*ggas who had the will. Life. Never coming home..."

DJ Khaled On Rick Ross Vs. Jeezy

DJ Khaled shared his take on the beef between Rick Ross and Young Jeezy that nabbed headlines last summer and left lingering rumors that the two rap superstars aren't on the best of terms.

According to Khaled, its all much ado about nothing. But he didn't elaborate on the specifics.

"First of all, I don't condone problems. I represent that love and making good music," explained Khaled. "Them two guys, they don't have problems. ...They don't have problems. People just try to make things into a problem."

Wiz Khalifa, Nicki MInaj Win Big

The 2011 BET Awards featured several notable hip hop honors taking home honors. Celebrities like participated in the ceremony and won accolades, with comedian Kevin Hart serving as host for the event, which took place in Los Angeles, California.

nicki Minaj was named best Female Hip Hop Artist, Best Group went to Diddy/Dirty Money, and Best Collaboration went to Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes for "Look At Me Now." Wiz Khalifa took home the coveted Best New Artist.

"They need a taller mic for me," Wiz joked. "I am not used to winning stuff. I want to thank everyone at rostrum records, everyone at Atlantic, all my fans, The Taylor Gang and all the young people who promote positive and just enjoying yourself, this is for y'all."

Mary J. Blige, Jadakiss and DJ Khaled opened the show, while Rick Ross performed his single "Aston Martin Music" minus Crisette Michelle or Drake [who did attend the awards].

Gladys Knight presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Patti Labelle, and Snoop Dogg and Warren G took part in a tribute to their late friend and collaborator Nate Dogg, who passed away earlier this year.

Rick Ross' Face Tattoo

In what is probably one of the worst fads in the history of hip hop--yet another rapper has joined the ranks of the facially-tattooed. None other than Miami's own Rick Ross has gotten "Cazal" on the left side of his face. That's the popular eyewear company, for those unfamiliar. Ross reportedly has a large vintage Cazal collection; which of course makes getting it tattooed on his face completely understandable. Yung LA, Diamond and Gucci Mane are among the rappers who previously got face tattoos earlier this year.

2Pac Honored In Atlanta

On what would've been the 40th anniversary of the late rapper Tupac Shakur, several celebrities and artists gathered at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center in Stone Mountain, GA to pay tribute to the fallen rapper/actor, who was shot and later died in September 1996.

Meek Mill, Bun B, Warren G, Too Short, jazz singer/producer Roy Ayers, Rick Ross and Erykah Badu were among those in attendance. The event was hosted by Mike Epps.

"For a lot of lil' dudes in a single parent home [like me] with my mother, Tupac played father for a lot of dudes like me," Rick Ross said to the crowd. "Tupac was the first one that showed me how to be fully committed. I took [aspects of him like] his [loyalty], to his hard work, his ethic, his family with me. When we talk about his record sales, let's not forget the role he played to all the little Black boys around the world."

"My first reaction to Tupac was he's not a rapper, he's not an actor, he's a savior of sorts. But he came at a time when people weren't looking for a savior, they were looking for someone who looked like them," she said. "But saviors, sometimes are just doing the work, they are just doing their job."

Rick Ross Motivated By Wiz Khalifa

Rick Ross revealed in a recent interview that an early rejection has motivated his Maybach Music imprint's latest successes. The label put in a bid for Wiz Khalifa, and the upstart Pittsburgh emcee declined. Wiz's decision convinced Ross to step his game up on the business end.

"I put the proposition out there. But at the time, Maybach Music wasn't really where we were supposed to be, which was a lot of motivation," Ross explained. "The homey made a great decision, going to Atlantic Records. He's released a classic album, and I wish him much success. But it also inspired me and it also reassured me that I had a certain eye. I remember when I put Wiz on the 'Super High' remix, a lot of people was like, 'Why would you put a rookie on your record?'"

Wale On Rick Ross' Mentorship

Rapper Wale recently revealed just how much he's learned since he's been affiliated with Rick Ross' Maybach Music. The D.C. rapper says being Ross has given him a deeper appreciation of music and being an artist.

"I never knew how to get lost in music. I never knew how to just wake up, smoke a J, and play music all day," Wale explained when asked what he has learned from Ross. "I do that now. When I recorded [my 2009 debut] Attention Deficit, I treated the studio like it was a 9-5. I walked in there with my briefcase--which was my book bag--with my music, some energy drinks, and some weed. I come in at 11 and I clocked out at five no matter what I got done. Now, there's times where I left the studio at nine in the morning after I went in at six the night before."

Rick Ross Bashes "No Homo"

Rick Ross has gone on the record regarding hip hop's obsession with 'no homo.' Ross says he doesn't use the phrase and doesn't see why so many people are so insecure that they feel the need to constantly pepper their conversations with 'no homo.'

"I've been on Twitter before, and somebody will say something to me with "no homo" at the end," Ross said. "And I'm like, Why the f*ck would you even need to say that? ... I don't use it. There's no reason. I mean you Tweet me, I hope you're no homo. They'll be like, 'Yo man, let me get your blunt, no homo.' That's why I don't smoke with nobody."

Nas Is Motivated By Young Rappers

Nas says that younger stars are motivating him to step his game up and get to work on his upcoming projects. Name-dropping everyone from Kanye to Odd Future, Nas acknowledged that he's eager to see how his new work will fare in the current musical climate. "I'm happy about music, it's pushing me back into the studio," Nas says. "I just love what's happening [in music]: I love Odd Future, [Lil] Wayne, Drake, 'Ye [and] Rick Ross. It's something that threatens my position. Or it makes me question what I'm going to do next. What kind of impact do I want have now that I've been in the business this long. It's a challenge, it's scary even. But I'm very comfortable. I'm excited to see what comes out of me... I'm ready."

Rick Ross Was Inspired By Diddy

Rick Ross revealed that his inspiration for launching his own Maybach Music Group was seeing hip hop moguls like Diddy and Cash Money's Brian "Baby" Williams. Following their template, Ross has begun building his own stable of artists, ranging from rapper Wale to soul singer Teedra Moses.

"Building Maybach Music Group, building this empire, of course I was inspired by some of the earlier movements and earlier dudes that came along such as Cash Money [and] Bad Boy Records. To me, when I really think about the greatest era of hip-hop, that was the greatest eras of hip-hop; when I turned on the TV and saw Big, Mase, Junior Mafia, and the Lox. That was the most exciting era of hip-hop. I looked at the No Limit era and saw that camaraderie that they had, that unity, that brotherhood that they shared. I think it spilled over from [their] music," Rick Ross says.
